Vous avez sûrement vu leur nom quelque part... En effet, ce groupe fait son buzz depuis un bon bout de temps. Enchainant les grosses tracks et de bons featurings, nous avont décidé d'approfondir vos connaissances sur leur parcours. Et pour la joie de tous les lecteurs nous avons traduit l'échange.
• Tout d'abord, présentez-vous pour les personnes qui ne vous connaîtraient pas. Pourquoi "Smacktown" ?
Nous étions restés dans une boîte jusqu'à la fin d'une soirée et nous étions "Smacking out" (=déphasé). J'ai regardé autour de moi et je me suis dit "nous sommes dans une ville de déphasé" et un pote m'a dit: "Haha Smacktown". Voilà pour l'anecdote.
Qu'est-ce que smacktown représente pour nous ? Ce sont tous les coins sombres du monde qui sont méprisés par la haute société, toutes les choses qui sont interdites par les règles appliquées par les puissances du monde, Smacktown représente la ville de la liberté. "Fuck the world lets get trashed!!!"
• Depuis combien de temps êtes-vous dans le rap? Pouvez-vous nous dire les grands traits de votre carrière?
N3RY:
Je rap depuis maintenant 12ans et je produis depuis 10ans. J'ai commencé avec mon père qui faisait de la musique latine. Ensuite, je me suis dirigé vers le monde du hip hop. J'ai reçu une récompence à l'International Los Angeles Music Awards pour mon album "Bloodynery" ce qui fut génial! Ensuite en 2008 nous avons créé le groupe Smacktown avec Chico Cas.
CHICO CAS:
Le hip-hop fait parti de mes racines. J'ai commencé à écrire quand j'étais jeune mais ce n'était pas de façon sérieuse. À partir de 2002, j'ai commencé à me faire un nom dans les clubs hip-hop, grâce aux compétitions de freestyle. J'ai donc sorti quelques morceaux et mixtapes avec plusieurs artistes et nous avons tournés un peu partout dans Sydney. C'est en 2008 que j'ai commencé à travailler avec N3RY, puis Smacktown est né !
• Décrivez précisément votre musique.
Bah lorsque l'on fais un show et que la foule fout un tel bordel dans le club, les mots qui nous viennent à l'esprit pour décrire notre musique sont: puissance, agressivité, dynamisme. Que dire de plus ? Bien, nous avons tendance à mettre un peu de poésie et un sens réfléchi dans nos paroles pour transmettre aux fans quelque chose qui les touchera, par exemple dans la track "Feeling good", nous parlons d'une joie de vivre alors que dans "Jump the fuck up", on s'exprime sur la politique et sur notre envie de changer le monde. “Smacktillian shuffle” est plus une track qui nous représente nous ainsi que nos fans.
• Comment ressentez-vous le concept de l'électronique mélangée avec des paroles hip-hop ?
La music évolue constamment et il nous a donc paru important de prendre un chemin bien spécifique. Je pense que c'est la meilleure décision qu'on est prise jusqu'à aujourd'hui en ce qui concerne notre style, caractérisé par l'association d'une musique énergique et du rap.
• Quelles sont vos influences ?
Et bien pour ce qui est des paroles, nous nous inspirons de beaucoup d'artistes comme Lil'Wayne ou encore Tech N9ne et pour ce qui est des "instrus", nous apprécions Huoratron, Keatch, Danger, Gtronic, mais aussi des groupes de rock comme Soul Fly, Metallica, Static X et Slipknot.
• Vos tracks du moment ?

• On peut voir que pendant vos shows, l'atmosphère est vraiment folle, et elle dégage une atmosphère explosive. Comment ressentez-vous ces lives ?
On se sent comme nous devrions l'être à chaque moment. Plus rien ne compte ou n'existe que pour ce moment de pure énergie, de bordel, et de bonheur !
• Revenons sur votre collaboration avec Danger, qui de vous à proposer l'idée d'un featuring ? Comment avez-vous produit cette track ?
Il est évident que ce featuring avec Danger fût une chance pour nos débuts. En fait, il aimait l'idée d'associer du Hip-Hop avec de la musique électronique et quand il a remarqué notre énergie lors de nos shows, il a voulu collaborer avec nous. Nous lui avons donc envoyé des acapellas, et quelques semaines plus tard, il a renvoyé un échantillon de 17h05, totallement fou ! Nous avons donc enregistrer des vocales en studio, dailleur on peut le voir sur la vidéo Youtube.
• 17h05 est totallement folle, quand est-elle née ?
Les vocales ont été composées en 2008, je ne suis pas certain que Danger ait finalisé la track.
• Quel est le lien entre ce producteur et vous ?
Nous sommes des collègues. Nous avons joué aux côtés de Danger à deux reprises à nos débuts.
• Que pensez-vous de lui et de ses morceaux ? Qu'est-ce qu'il vous plaît dans sa music ? Une track favorite ?
Danger est un artiste géniale qui créé des tracks à vous faire voyager, c'est vraiment difficile pour un artiste d'accomplir cela. Sa musique est unique et donne des sensations de bonheur. C'est un artiste qui vous captive avec sa musique, de sorte que toute personne ne soit en mesure de résister à l'attraction de ses morceaux. Il est difficile de choisir une track mais je dirais Danger - 88:88 stage 3 the club pour son coté "dark". C'est ce côté sombre qui fait qu'on kiffe ce morceau.
• On peut vous voir enregistrer les paroles de 17h05 sur une video de youtube (affichée en 2008) et on peut également lire en commentaire: "Smacktown enregistrant en studio la partie vocal pour leur collaboration avec Danger pour sa prochaine track "17h05" qui sortira bientôt". Pensez-vous que "17h05 sera incluse dans le futur album ?
Normalement, l'idée était qu'elle sorte dans l'un des EP de Danger mais je ne suis plus certain de la tournure des choses.
• Retour sur vous, pouvez-vous nous partager vos futures projets ?
Nous sommes à quelques semaines de la sortie de notre 1er EP qui s'intitulera "Warning", sur le label Fight Music. Nous travaillons également avec des artistes du label Tuff Em Up, et d'autres bons artistes, mais nous n'en dirons pas plus ;)
• Quand comptez-vous venir en France ?
Nous comptons venir très bientôt en France, d'ailleurs nous sommes en train de planifier un tour en Europe prévu pour cette année.

• Firstly, present you for peoples who don't know you. Why "Smacktown"?
How we came across the name well we were sitting in a club in the city one night off our faces “Smacking out” is the term we use here in Australia , I looked around and said “we’re in a town of smack”, and a friend says “haha A Smacktown” and the rest is history. What smacktown represents to us is all the dark corners of the world that is looked down on by upper society all the things that are forbidden by rules enforced by the powers of the world, smacktown represents the town of the free. Fuck the world lets get trashed!!
• How long have you been singing?? Can you resume your career?
N3RY:
I’ve been rapping(singing) for about 12 years and producing about 10 years. I started off performing with my father who is also a musician doing latin music, then moved on to doing hip hop produced an album “Bloodynery” which won me an award at the International Los Angeles Music Awards which was great! Then we created Smacktown in the early 2008!
CHICO CAS:
Hip Hop being my roots I began to write lyrics at a young age but didn’t take it serious till bout year 2000. By 2002 had Started making a name for myself in hip hop clubs, Freestyle competitions and performing along side hip hop club scene dj’s all across Sydney, then having released hip hop tracks and mix tapes with artists and crews around syd. In 2008 started working with N3RY and smacktown was born.
• Can you describe more precisely your music?
hmmm when you see mosh pits and crowd surfing in a club the best way to describe our music is Powerful , Heavy , Aggressive, breaks barriers in music, punches you right in the face & not for the faint hearted. What we talk about Well we tend to put a poetic and clever twist to our lyrics so we give fans something to think about and enjoy whilst we touch many subjects, for example in “feeling good” we talk bout enjoying life, ladies, parties etc, then we have “Jump the fuck up” in which we get very political and we express our anger in how fucked up the world is, then “Smacktillian shuffle” is more a party track that represents who Smacktown is and who Smacktown fans (smacktillians) are.
• How do you feel about the concept of electronic music mixed with your hip-hop lyrics?
Music is always evolving and it seems it was the step we had to take, I feel like it’s the best decision we have ever made. They flow together perfectly, the art of Hard Powerful Music and Hard Percussive lyrics.
• What are your main musical influences?
Well lyrically we listen to alot of Lil Wayne and Tech N9ne and musically artist like Huoratron, Keatch, Danger, Gtronic and also many Heavy rocks bands such as Soul Fly, Metallica, Static X, and Slipknot.

• We can see that during your live show; the atmosphere is explosive, furious, and full enjoyed. How do you feel this moment?
It feels like where exactly where we have to be in that moment, nothing else matters or exists just that moment of pure Energy, Mayhem, and Bliss!
• Let Focus on your collaboration with Danger. You worked with Danger for a track: "17h05". Who of you and Danger proposed that? How did you work to produce this track?
Well lucky for us our debut was playing along side danger here in Aust with Trahsbags. He liked the idea of hip hop over electronic music and said to us he loved our Energy on stage and wanted to collaboration on a track, so we sent him through some acapella a few weeks later he send though a sample of 17h05 Crazy! we thought we need to record the vocals again this time at a pro studio, there comes the youtube video! And its done!
• This track is very crazy!!! Today, we are in 2010, when was it composed?!
The vocals were composed in 2008, im not sure if danger has finished the whole track!
• What's the link between this producer and you ?
We are musical colleagues, we have performed alongside danger twice on our debut and also at we love sounds festival Trashbags Tent here in Australia.
• What do you think about him and its tracks ? What's the Danger's track do you prefer and why? What attract you in its music?
Danger is a Great artists who’s music takes you on journeys, its very hard for a Artist to accomplish this. He has a positive unique sound, that fills the listener with a feeling of bliss.An artist that captures you with his music, so any musician or person with a good ear wouldn’t be able to resist being attracted to his music, its hard to choose a favorite but I think it will have to be 88:88 the club stage 3, it has a dark element to it that we love.
• Now, on youtube, we can read under a video of 2008:"Smacktown's Chico Cas & N3ry live in the studio recording the vocals for their collaboration with French dj, Danger on his latest track "17h05" from his new album to be realesed soon"... Do you think it will be integrated on the Danger's Album which will be release soon??
The original idea was for it to be released on one of Dangers E.P’s, but I am not sure on Dangers Plans with the song.
• Come back on you, can you tell us your future projects (featuring, EP-LP, Show...)?
Yes we are weeks away from finishing and releasing our first E.P “Warning” on the label Fight Music, also working very closely with Tuff Em Up Records Artist, and other great artists but that’s a surprise!!
• When will you come to France?!!!
Very soon. We are looking to travel to Europe late 2010
